hi all,
i'm new to linux and have installed quite a few different distros in the past week or two looking for one that's just right for my 9 yr old pc.

I like the connos ethos of keeping it simple so i'm gonna keep this one and learn to navigate the whole os.

Would it be totally stupid to install chromium on connos with flash in order to watch youtube clips without lag, or is it possible to tweek the default browser settings?

It seems the only distro i've used that was able to play youtube clips well was absolute linux which has chromium and flash installed.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I have a soltek board with 1gb ram, amd athlon3200+ and a geforce fx5600.

ConnochaetOS is made for really low-specs machines. That means, with less than -- let's say -- 256 MB RAM and the focus is on machines with less than 128 MB RAM.
With this RAM limit, chromium is definitely an overkill and won't run. And a flash player won't be fun, if it is working at all. Therefore ConnOS doesn't provide any flash player and it probably never will. And there are many other limitations as well.

To make a long story short : with your 1 GB machine a full-scale distro is probably the better choice, especially if you use an lightweight window manager/desktop like XFCE, LXDE or Icewm.

However, if you want to learn something about the internals of GNU/Linux, ConnOS may be a better choice as you have the chance to lay hands on almost every config file without the risk to break one of the complex dependencies other distros have.

connOS is free as in freedom, so offering non-free plugins or documentations would be against our aims and goals. Unless gnash (free replacement for flash) becomes more lightweight, it's a no go, because we aim for really low specs.

Connos is optimized for < 1GB RAM and a Pentium I, so you are well over. I'd suggest parabola or other Freedom respecting distro.

there is a simple way to look video with Connos:

Download and start it from console with mplayer. fluid playing at an 300 MHz-Laptop with 128 MB RAM.

If you have DVD it works, too.

But with gnome-Mplayer you need more ram and more CPU-Power (i don't know the reason, because gnomemplayer is only a menue for mplayer.

I would use iceweasel with unplug plugin for downloading http://unplug.dbatley.com/ and mplayer for playing. Video playback is much faster without browser/gnash (or flash).

Thnx for the input guys.
I'll try both mplayer and iceweasel and post the results.

I have a bit more experience now since my first post, and realise that chromium and flash were a bad idea.

install java in iceweasel

for java, I followed this ...download from here

http://java.com/en/download/linux_manual.jsp?locale=en

Install the JRE

tar -xvf jre-7u9-linux-i586.tar.gz

JRE 7 package is extracted into ./jre1.7.0 directory . ( rename this folder as jre1.7.0 & move it to /usr/lib/ )

now login as root

enter in terminal

cd /usr/lib/iceweasel-11.0/plugins

ln -s /usr/lib/jre1.7.0/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so . (don't forget the dot)

You are recommending non free software. I don't think this is in the sense of ConnochaetOS.

Yeah, you can use ConnochaetOS and non-free software, but

NO

It's sufficient to emphasize the non-free rules of ConnochaetOS as you did. Of course, it's mandatory to follow the strict rules for the "staff" of the forum and all forum members are asked for that, too.

But as long as the postings are not spam or of offending content, I'm not willing to remove them completely. For me this would be a kind of overreaction and even censorship. Actually, I think this is a good opportunity to mention the non-free rules in the forum again.

I'm actually glad you didn't remove the offending posts - I understand the principles in play here, but I found the links to the "not free" software to be helpful, too.
